Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how Bindery ("we", "our", or "the app") handles your information. Bindery is a document viewer that opens the files you import and remembers where you left off. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring transparency about our data practices.

Information We Collect

Documents and Files

• Documents you import are copied into the app's private storage on your device
• Parsing and rendering happen entirely inside the app on your device
• Other than the four conversion formats listed below, Bindery does not upload your document file to our servers. Remote images referenced by Markdown files can contact their image hosts, as explained under Network Usage

The one exception: Word and PowerPoint conversion

The app cannot render Word and PowerPoint files directly, so it converts them to PDF. This conversion happens on our server, not on your device. It applies to exactly four file types:

• .doc and .docx (Word)
• .ppt and .pptx (PowerPoint)

When you import one of these files, the following happens:

• The file is sent over an encrypted connection to our conversion service, which runs on Google Cloud Run in the Tokyo region (asia-northeast1)
• The service converts it to PDF and sends the PDF back
• The conversion service uses temporary working files and removes its request-specific files after processing. We do not provide server-side document storage, document backups, or a document-content database. Service providers may retain operational and security records about requests
• The app keeps both the returned PDF and a copy of the original Word or PowerPoint file in its private storage on your device. The original remains available for sharing. Deleting the document from the library removes both app-managed files
• Conversion happens once, at import time. Reopening the resulting PDF does not repeat the conversion

Importing any other format — PDF, HWP, HWPX, Excel, images, text, Markdown, HTML — does not upload the document to our conversion service. The app records that an import happened and what type of file it was, as described under Usage Analytics below. If you choose a file from a cloud provider in the system file picker, that provider downloads it under its own terms.
